Deosai National Park is indeed among the few stunning wonders of nature. Its heavenly beauty, surreal landscape, sublime lakes, celestial and lofty mountains, and mesmerizing views, kept every gazer and visitor in its exquisite charm. The beauty of this angelic place, is just can’t be explained in words, nor can be captured in pictures. It just stays in your mind, in your eyes and in your memory, as a most alluring sight, for a lifetime. It’s just really a phenomenal experience.
Nestled in the heart of Gilgit-Baltistan, Deosai National Park is a mesmerizing land of vast golden plains, snow-capped peaks, and an ecosystem that feels untouched by time. Often called the “Land of Giants,” Deosai sits at an altitude of 4,114 meters (13,497 feet), making it one of the highest plateaus in the world. Travelers seeking adventure, breathtaking landscapes, and wildlife exploration find Deosai to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The enormous grassland is also famous for its abundance of wildflowers. From June-September, there is a peak wildflower season in Deosai. When bloom is at its climax, you can enjoy a beautiful sight of tiny and small wild flowers of various kinds, having different colors and spread across the plain. These small ornaments enhance the beauty and glory of the whole landscape and make it a real wonder of northern Pakistan.
I had heard many stories about the mesmerizing beauty of Deosai before visiting. Travelers talked about its lush grasslands, freezing winds, vibrant wildflowers, Himalayan brown bears, and skies filled with countless stars. I also saw many pictures and many videos of the region on the internet. And quite anticipated the experience of camping in Deosai. But no story, picture or video could explain or comprehend what it actually felt like to spend a night there completely alone beneath the open sky.
Although this was not a luxury trip with heated camps and bonfires. But rich with simple and raw nature. The cold winds, deep silence, darkness without city lights, and a sky so clear that every star looked alive. That single night in Deosai taught me more about peace, simplicity, fear, patience, and life than many crowded years in cities ever could. It was a night to contemplate on the fact that we are progressing or depressing ourselves in a city life.
In this article, I will share my journey through Deosai Plains, what it was like spending a night under the stars, the beauty and challenges of the experience, and the lessons this unforgettable adventure left with me.
Reaching the Land of Giants
There are two main routes to reach Deosai National Park:
- Skardu to Deosai (Rough Adventure Route – 4×4 Recommended)
- Astore to Deosai (Smooth Highway Route – Car-Friendly)
Each route offers a unique experience. If you love off-road adventure, Skardu’s rough terrain is thrilling. But if you prefer a smoother ride, the Astore route is better.
I decided to experience a raw and bumpy jeep ride to Deosai. In other words I chose the Skardu route to reach Deosai. The journey from Skardu to Deosai was as marvelous as the destination. As we move forward from Skardu the road slowly leaves behind the busy town and enters a world filled with mountains, rivers, and open landscapes. As the altitude increases, the air becomes colder and fresher.
The Changing Landscape
One of the most beautiful parts of the journey is watching the scenery transform gradually.
- Green valleys slowly disappear
- Rocky mountains begin surrounding the road
- Trees become fewer as the altitude rises
- Vast grasslands start appearing in the distance
- Streams and waterfalls flow beside the road
The changing landscape makes the drive itself feel like an adventure.
Feeling the Vastness of Deosai
The Deosai Plains are one of the greatest natural wonders of northern Pakistan. It can be described in a lot of ways like wild, desolate, lush, surreal, among many, many others. But there is one word that sums it up best: big and vast. Deosai is the epitome of vastness.
Once you’re here, all you can see is just endless grasslands and sky. The furthest landmarks are walls of mountains on all sides, leagues away guarding the plains. To me, the whole area feels like a microcosm of the universe as if the mountains hide the idyllic plateau away from the rest of the prying world.
First Glimpse of Deosai Plains
As soon as our jeep stops at the wonderful destination, as I put my first glance upon the vast, gigantic and endless plain of Deosai, the enchanting and angelic beauty of the plateau spell bound me.
I stared in absolute reverence, mesmerized by the delicate interplay of endless grassland, wild flowers, wall of colossal mountains, my eyes wide and unblinking as if trying to memorize every impossible shade.
The quiet is so thick and profound that one can listen to the unheard voices of rustling wind, flowing river (Bara Pani), chirping of birds, whistling of golden marmots, distant cry of a himalayan golden eagle and the blooming of wild flowers.
I just stand there for countless ticking of clock and just sooth my visuals with the indescribable and uncapturable beauty of plain. I tried to lock every glance, each view, tiny details, vast grasslands, mighty mountains in my mind.
Many travelers rush to take photographs immediately, but Deosai makes you pause naturally. You want to absorb the atmosphere before capturing it.

Why I Decided to Stay the Night Alone
There are three major campgrounds in Deosai:
- Bara Pani
- Kala Pani
- Sheosar Lake.
There are communal tents at Bara Pani that you can use. But I decided to stay a bit further from the crowd and set up my own tent in a lonely and tranquil place. I wanted to feel the whole journey in its raw, rugged, rough, desolate and tranquil form.
Most people avoid staying overnight. Freezing temperatures, wildlife, strong winds, and the loneliness of the plains after dark. It’s challenging, risky and not suitable for all types of visitors. The warnings honestly made me nervous. I was pretty excited about spending a night so intimate with nature but thought of bears were the only thing which made me terrified.
Sunset Over Deosai
The view of sunset at the vast and highest plateau is spectacular. The unending, lush and expanded plain bathed in the shades of golden, orange and copper. Vibrant, colorful and dancing wildflowers transform into dark silhouettes. The distant, snow capped lofty mountains slowly turned from bright white to hues of glowing pink and deep violet.
Every distant and minor sound suddenly becomes audible. The movement of wind through grass, flowing water from streams, and occasional animal noises create an atmosphere that feels both peaceful, and slightly terrible.
I remember sitting outside my tent wrapped in layers of warm clothing and watching how the sun gradually sank behind the mountains, and how the darkness manifested its superiority after sun set. The darkness swallowed the color of all vibrant details in the landscape.
The whole moment and atmosphere slows down everything. The peace, tranquility and darkness, provides you time to connect with your inner self.
I just put my cell phone aside and spent time with nature and with myself.
The Fear That Arrives After Darkness
The moment the last sunlight disappeared, the temperature dropped rapidly. The plains became silent in a way I had never experienced before.
In daylight, Deosai feels majestic.
At night, it feels mysterious.
I remember sitting outside my tent wrapped in layers of warm clothing, looking into complete darkness surrounding me from every direction.
There were moments when fear entered my mind.
What if wild animals came near the camp?
What if weather conditions became dangerous?
What if something happened while I was completely alone?
But Deosai forced me to face that fear honestly.
The Sky That Changed Everything
I was terrified and petrified by the extreme darkness, but at the moment I looked upward at the clear deep blue sky, every other feeling disappeared. At that moment that feeling of awe, surprise and astonishment overwhelmed me.
The entire sky exploded with stars.
I had seen stars before, but never like this. In cities, the sky is so polluted that stars are less visible or are not as shiny as in Deosai.
The sky in Deosai was unbelievably clear, revealing thousands upon thousands of stars stretching endlessly across the darkness.
The Milky Way appeared like a glowing river above the plains.
The view was celestial and unreal.
I lay down on the cold ground for nearly an hour simply staring upward. Shooting stars crossed the sky occasionally while the freezing wind moved softly across the grasslands.
That moment changed something inside me.
For the first time in years, my mind became completely quiet.
No stress.
No fear.
No unnecessary worries.
Just silence, stars, and existence itself.
The experience was purely sublime and surreal.
Understanding How Small We Really Are
The exhausting and tiring rat race of city life. The race to excel in our career, the race to own a house, the race to furnish your house, the race to have a car, transform us into robots. We just forgot about every other thing, we became thankless for many blessings and started taking them for granted. For us earning money and having a lavish lifestyle is the main motif of our life.
But Deosai unfolded the grandeur and vastness of nature in front of me. It makes me realize that human beings are tiny and small in front of mother nature and the universe. This feeling did not make me feel weak but it made me feel free.
The air, sky, meadows, mountains, stars, moon, lakes and rivers are the treasure of nature and life is something else than running behind luxury. Under this vast sky, thousands of creatures live.
This feeling made me humble and filled my heart with gratitude.
Listening to Nature Instead of Noise
In our usual daily life, our day and night is filled with the sounds of horns, mobile tunes, television, music, traffic and gossip. These sounds create pollution and also keep our mind constantly engaged and occupied.
But at Deosai I experienced something entirely different.
The quiet and muted atmosphere of the plateau when there is no distraction and tension to occupy my mind. I begin noticing things you normally ignore:
- The sound of flowing water
- The rhythm of wind
- The movement of clouds
- The brightness of stars
- Your own breathing
- Your own thoughts
At first, silence feels uncomfortable because modern life trains us to avoid it.
But after some time, silence becomes healing.
Sometimes peace exists in the simplest moments, and this peace touches your inner self .
The Coldest Night I Ever Experienced
The vlogs I watched about camping at Deosai, and the stories I read, all romanticized the experience of a night stay in Deosai. But no one explained about the challenge of staying in Deosai for night in a camp. No one guided about the intensity of cold in the plains.
Even inside the tent with warm layers and sleeping equipment, the freezing air found its way through everything. Strong winds shook the tent repeatedly throughout the night.
At that altitude, temperatures can drop dramatically even during summer.
But strangely, those difficult moments, unbearable cold, darkness, piercing silence drew me closer to nature and made the experience more meaningful.
Wildlife and the Feeling of Being a Guest
The Deosai park is part of the Conservation International Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot and contains a rich variety of species including a population of:
- Tibetan Wolf
- Himaliyan Ibex
- Tibetan Red Fix
- Golden Marmots
- Himaliyan Brown Bears
- Local Snow Trout
- Himalayan Snowcock
- Golden Eagle
- Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture)
- Peregrine Falcon
The list shows the diversity of Deosai Plain’s wildlife. But among all other animals, encountering a Brown Himalayan Bear has more chances. The region is a natural habitat and home of above animals and is certainly not owned by human beings.
You are just an intruder, a trespasser or a guest. That perspective changes the way you travel.
Our duty as a guest or traveler is not to soil the natural habitat and home of so many animals. We should follow all protocols and preserve this treasure as much as we can.
When you are alone in such a wild environment, you understand that nature does not belong to us. We are just a creature among thousands of other creatures who belong within it.
Sunrise Over the Plains
After spending a freezing, dark and desolate night at the Plains.
The rising of sun from behind the distant mountains, and as it spread warm yellow and golden rays. Everything seems rejuvenating with life.Every blade of green glass, the sky, the tiny colorful flowers, the distant mountains, all again filled with vibrant colors. All living creatures look like they are celebrating the morning, the warmth of the sun and its light.
I made tea beside the tent while watching sunlight spread across the endless plains.
That simple moment became one of the happiest memories of my life.
No luxury resort could ever replace that feeling.
What Deosai Taught Me About Solitude
Most people confuse loneliness with solitude. Loneliness is living alone in a place, in a home or anywhere. But solitude is something else. Solitude is spending time with yourself, in a place where there is no worry, no stress and no fear. Where you are liberated and connect with your inner self, which may be lost in the daily grind of life.
You pass through a phase of self discovery, you face your innermost fear and guilt and confront them. You mend your wounded self and rejoice in yourself.
This is solitude, which I found in a day and night spent in vast and mesmerizing Deosai plains.
I started realizing about the unnecessary burden we took on ourselves. I also came to know that to live for your happiness, for yourself, being true to yourself and how to accept your fear, your weakness and your strength can make you happy and free.

A strong water proof tent and warm sleeping bag and an extra small blanket or comforter are essential because winds can become intensely cold at night.

Facilities are very limited inside the plains. Always pack some extra food, dry snacks and energy bars, for any emergency condition.

Weather changes rapidly in high-altitude regions. Always check the weather forecast before planning a trip and avoid travel during rainy and stormy seasons.
7. Keep the Environment Clean

Best Time to Visit Deosai Plains
The best season to visit Deosai National Park is summer, between July and September when roads remain open and wildflowers cover the plains beautifully.
During this period:
- Weather is comparatively stable and pleasant
- Grasslands appear green and colorful
- Wildlife sightings become more common
- Camping conditions are safer
- Roads from Skardu remain accessible
Winter visits are extremely dangerous because heavy snowfall cuts off access completely.
