You can reach to Skardy through a road trip or by air as well, and both kindly of journey are amazing like the destination.

Flight to Skardu

A domestic flight to Skardu from Islamabad is typically known as the most scenic and spectacular flight in world, provided the weather is clear and there are no clouds to obstruct the stunning views of snow covered peaks. The magnificent views of Lake Saif-ul-mulook, Nanga Parbat, Rakaposhi, Tirch Meers and K2 can be seen during the flight. The road trip from Lahore to Skardu is 1000 km long hectic and tiring journey. There are 2 amazing routes lead to Skardu from Islamabad. One route is via Naran and Babusar top and the second one is via Karakorum Highway. Both road trips are offer you a great and unforgettable travel experience. But according to me the road trip to Skardu via Naran is a more picturesque and breathtaking in its landscape and views. When I visited Skardu, I drove to the destination via Naran. And as we crossed Abbottabad and Haweliyan district, the road becomes stunningly captivating, the views of towering lush green mountains, zigzag, flowing river, small roadside villages, steep and narrow turns, small cafes and restaurants, really filled my gaze even before arriving the destination.

On the other hand, the route to Skardu via KKH, is also a great experience. But the road is rough and also the landscape is rugged and dry as compare to the Naran route.

How Many Days Do You Actually Need?

A trip to the heavenly valley of Skardu can be accomplished in minimum of 5 day period if you are travelling via road. But if you are going by air, you can also enjoy the trip in 3 days. But if you ask me, I would suggest a minimum 7 days trip to the valley. As the Skardu is an immensely beautiful region and also an exceptionally high altitude area. That is why it demands a slow paced and calm kind of travelling to comprehend the spell bounding landscape.

When I traveled to Skardu I planned a 7 day trip including the22 hour’s long drive with a night stay in Naran. Indeed having a 6.5 days’ time in Skardu, I was pretty longing for a more long stay at the time of my return.

But if you want to enjoy culture, leisure walks across the remote villages, a market tour, and want to visit some hidden gems near Skardu, a 10 day trip could be a good choice.

  • Upper and Lower Kachura Lakes: Kachura Lakes (Kachura Jheel) are two lakes in Skardu “Upper Kachura Lake” and “Lower Kachura Lake”. Upper Kachura Lake is located in the upper region of Kachura and Lower Kachura Lake is located in the lower region of Kachura, also known as Shangri-La Lake. Local Balti people often call upper Khachura lake as an “Unseen Bride”, because many tourist do not visit the lake due to rough and hectic hike, and the place is still uncrowded as compare to Shangri-La Lake. Visitors can also enjoy a boat ride in both lakes. When I went to these mesmerizing lakes, the backdrop of snow-covered towering peaks, apricot orchards and a cup of tea with pakoras, really left a mark on my memory. Although I didn’t try the boat ride.

  • Skardu Fort (Kharpocho): Kharpocho means the King of Forts in the Balti language. Access to the Kharpocho Fort is quite tricky because fort is located at a height from central Skardu city and the area is very rough and rocky. So one has to hike to behold the historical beauty of fort with a backdrop of mighty mountains and marvelous view of Skardu city and river from the fort. Before arriving in Skardu, I was firm to not skip the Kharpocho fort as I wanted to witness to historical and ancient culture of Skardu and its prestige through this fort.

  • Shigar Valley and Shigar Fort: Shigar valley is nearly at half an hour drive from Skardu. Shigar Valley is known for its fertile lush green land and its ancient culture and small villages. Shigar Valley is also known as “The Land of K2.” 400 years old Shigar Fort is now reconstructed and restored as a luxurious hotel and fine dine restaurant, but also open for every travelers during day timings. The ancient Tibetan wooden architecture of Fort is such a rich site that I had a lunch in the restaurant and enjoyed the ancientl interior of restaurant and cultural serving style.

  • Katpana Cold Desert: Katpana Cold Desert is one of the highest desert in the world. The desert occupied a vast area of sand dunes which usually covered in snow during winter season. The place is easily accessible from Skardu city through car. Sunset and sunrise both times, the desert is seemed bathed in the yellow, orange and copper rays of sun. The landscape of the desert surrounded by snow covered peaks, manifest the diverse and dramatic beauty of Skardu.

Although I have missed some attraction like Mantokha waterfall and Khaplu Valley, as I missed those while my visit to Skardu. But the highlight of my visit to above mentioned places is Shigar Valley. I really spent ample time there, walking around the villages, interacting with the ladies, watching their handicrafts, tasting fresh apricot and homemade mulberry jam really made my day. On my way I came across a small restaurant ran by a group of ladies, who were selling some of the authentic delicacies of Sakrdu, there I had Giyaling (buckwheat pancakes) with salty yak milk tea. That was really a feast for my taste buds and for my visuals as well.

Hidden Spots Most Guides Skip

I have mentioned above many such places, which are the center of attraction for many tourist and also over crowded during peak season. But still there are some places which are untouched, remote, raw and pure and they are literally the hidden gems of Skardu.

·       Nangma Valley

·       Machlu Valley

·       Chunda Valley

·       Soq Valley

·       Blind Lake

·       Bashu Valley

Among these remote areas I just visited the Soq valley, which is hidden beind the Shigar Valley and is extremely tranquil and serene. The landscape is lush green, and also surrounded by mighty peaks.

Where to Stay: Real Recommendations by Budget

Regarding the stay and hotel budget, I will give a rough range of prices and facilities, to give a good idea about the budget for the people who are planning a first visit to Skardu.

Luxury (PKR 25,000–80,000+ per night, 2026 rates): Lakeside resorts at Shangri-La  and Upper Khachura Lake, or premium properties like Khaplu fort and Shigar fort or PC legacy in Skardu city, offer premium facilities, intricately furnished and give you a luxurious living experience. Such hotels cost approximately from 25,000 – 80,000 PKR per night. Yet masses cannot afford such expensive stay over.

Mid-range (PKR 8,000–18,000 per night): These mid-range hotels are usually densely crowded because majority of tourist prefer these hotels and guesthouses. These hotels have enough facilities to provide their guest a cozy and comforting stay. There price range is quite affordable like from 8,000 – 18,000 PKR per night.

Budget guesthouses and homestays (PKR 2,500–6,000 per night): With the increase in tourism, now many locals have opened homestays and local guesthouses in their private properties. These homestay are really economical and also provide a different rural and raw living experience during the stay. The range from 2,500 – 6,000 PKR per night.

Hotels and guesthouse prices consist a large part of budget during a trip. So if you had an idea of hotel budget, planning a trip would be lot more easily.

A Realistic Budget for Your Trip

The realistic budget for the trip to Skardu is a highly subjective matter, which is based on personal preferences of individuals. And depend upon following factors other than hotels

Transportation: If you are a group of friends and backpackers and travelling from NATCO or Faisal Mover, Bus services, the ticket charges would cost around 4,500 – 6,500 PKR per seat. This rate is quite reasonable and the service and quality of mentioned bus services are quite premium and comfortable, even families also prefer to travel on them. If you are driving to Skardu on your own vehicle, fuel charges would cost around PKR 30,000 for a return trip. A return air ticket from Islamabad to Skardu typically costs between Rs 40,020 and Rs 53,761 for a round trip.

Meals: Same is the case with the daily meals. The choice of meal and the choice of restaurant can change your trip budget. If you are dining at a luxurious restaurant that it would cost approximately 2000 – 3000 PKR per head but if you are eating in locals small food stalls and restaurants, each meal would cost approximately 500 – 1200 PKR per person.
Other than this, the selection of travel destinations from Skardu, would also make a big part of your budget. If you are only travelling to nearby places then it would be economical. But rides to remote and far flung areas like Deosai, would double the cost of your trip.

Essentials for Skardu

There are following essentials which one must to carry while traveling to Skardu, for every season.

  • Cash, as most of the areas do not have ATM facilities.
  • Nausea and anti-allergy medicines to combat the high altitude and change in climate.
